Kennan completed his medical degrees and a master’s degree in physiology at London and Oxford Universities. After periods in general practice and hospital psychiatry in Perth, Kennan undertook further training in nutritional, environmental medicine and in the psychoanalytic traditions. From a private practice in psychotherapy and holistic medicine his interests have become multidisciplinary, exploring complementary medical and various spiritual, creative and philosophical disciplines. Kennan’s clinical practice is called Mind Body; where the focus is primarily from the mental sphere into both the psychological and physical domains.
The relationship with the healing practitioner is central to his approach. This highlights the role and presence of the therapist, the quality of the relationship and facilitation of a co-creative process. Critical of the mechanical and scientific directions of medicine generally, and psychiatry in particular, he has developed a unique and comprehensive approach to illness and disease that focuses on health and healing, with life as creative, enriching and fundamentally spiritual in orientation.
Kennan’s focus is to integrate these disciplines into a genuinely holistic and psychospiritual approach to medicine. He has recently launched Blue Fire Health to house his intellectual property and modes of delivery; this is inclusive of the Mind Body clinical approach, but primarily spiritual and philosophical in orientation and educational in delivery. Other personnel and professionals join him on this project. In Blue Fire emphasis is placed on the needs of the participant and the core of story and creativity that runs through our lives. In this way medicine is given a wider and more modern definition; one that sees 'medicine' as a perspective of health that informs and is integral to the journey of life in its widest sense.
